Bryan Singer on Superman Sequel, "I’m going to take a brief pause."

Whether you want him back or not, Bryan Singer's name still keeps popping up as the possible director for the next Superman movie. Credited as the best X-Men movie director, many fans trashed his first effort at the man of steel saying "Superman Returns" was too full of angst and devoid of action.

While many reports talk of Warner Bros wanting to take a different and darker tact with the Superman franchise, and also liking the idea of dumping the last movie in favor of a reboot, other insiders still say Singer is involved. To clarify the matter, intrepid reporters at MTV asked him outright whether he was doing the deed, and here's what they got...

"At the moment I can’t really talk about that," said Singer. "I wish I could. From my perspective I’m going to take a brief pause. ["Valkyrie"] has taken a long time so I’m going to take a pause. A movie like that takes some time to do right. That’s all I can say about that."

So, to sum up, we basically STILL don't know whether he is involved or not.

Smallville Episode 10 "Bride" Clips Released

The CW network has released three new clips from "Smallville" as sneak peeks to episode 8.10, "Bride". They reveal some situations happening before and during Jimmy and Chloe's wedding ceremony.

The first clip features Lois helping to prepare Jimmy and Chloe's wedding ceremony, leading to her conversation with Jimmy about a 'right person'. The clip shows how Jimmy tells Lois that Chloe is the right person for him and that Clark possibly is also the right person for Lois.

In the second clip, Lois finally meets Clark before attending the wedding ceremony. During the meeting, Clark says words that Lois thinks are intended for her, but the words are actually Jimmy's vow to Chloe. Different from the first two clips, the third one features Davis whose part of body are covered by blood talking on the phone.

Christopher Reeve's Son On How To Make The Next Superman Movie: 'Just Be Original'

Many fans agree that there were a lot of things wrong with "Superman Returns" — but the filmmakers did manage to find an actor with an uncanny resemblance to the late Christopher Reeve. Was casting Brandon Routh a good thing? Does that honor Reeve’s memory?

Not necessarily, said Reeve’s son Matthew, during a recent fundraising event to benefit the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

"As far as we’re concerned, there’s only ever going to be one Superman," Matthew laughed.

So instead of worrying whether they should keep Routh or try to cast yet another actor who looks like Christopher Reeve in the upcoming reboot, Matthew suggested that Warner Bros. focus more on the story this next time around.

"There were lots of plot lines established, and it was very faithful to the original Donner films and sequels. I’d be curious to know how some of those plot lines in the last one will be continued or abandoned. If you look at 'The Dark Knight,' that was a phenomenal movie, and hopefully they can do something as good with the next version of this one."

Matthew’s advice, then, was this: "There are lots of fans of the comics and the films my dad did and the new one, and you can never please everyone. So just be original and creative and exciting, and I’m sure it will be successful."

Video Game Developer Factor 5 Designing "Superman" Game?

Recent reports have video game developer Factor 5, the studio best known for a stream of highly regarded “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” games, working on a "Superman" game for collapsing game publisher Brash.

In a recent interview with the MTV Multiplayer Blog, Factor 5 president Julian Eggebrecht discussed what the story is with "Superman" and what fans of the company should know about the studio’s status. He provided the following not terribly cryptic statement:

"We are working on several projects, both multi-platform as well as single-platform titles for the Wii which you will hear a lot more about very soon.

"One of our large-scale multi-platform projects was started with Brash because it is a dream property for us, hasn't been given its dues in gaming since the Atari 2600, and has a huge universe to draw from. It also is a long-term project because we were not willing to compromise quality at all from the start and make this into what we as fans, and hopefully every fan of the property - movies old or new, comic-book, or TV - wants to play. If we have delivered the ultimate fantasy fulfillment in a galaxy far, far away, this one certainly is intended to do the same for a completely different universe.

"With that said, things are obviously in flux and we hope that the game proves to be as indestructible as our hero..."

While Eggebrecht didn't necessarily say the word "Superman", it doesn’t take x-ray vision to read between the lines.

"Smallville" Writers Tapped For "Robotech" Remake

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers has hired former "Smallville" writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to pen the screenplay for "Robotech," a live action remake of the classic anime series. Surprisingly, they’re replacing Lawrence Kasdan who, as the writer of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," seems incapable of doing wrong by any movie.

"Robotech was a sprawling epic of a television series, spanning three generations and three different extraterrestrial wars. At its heart, though, it was about giant robots, technology developed thanks to an alien spaceship that crashed in the South Pacific. Just in time for mankind, since the giant robots were needed to fight off an alien invasion — but despite all that technology, humanity’s fate rested in the hands of two young pilots.

Tobey Maguire has been attached to the project as a producer but may star in the film as well. However, his involvement with future "Spider-Man" installments could keep him solely behind the camera.

New York Post Interviews Sam Witwer

Smallville: Season 8

Smallville newcomer Sam Witwer was recently interviewed by the New York Post in which the actor discusses what the future holds for his character Davis Bloome/Doomsday. Here's an excerpt:

NYPost: The fans are in a bit of an uproar since, unlike the comic book, Doomsday is human on the show. Thoughts?
Witwer: I know, I read that. Like, "why did they even call him Doomsday if he's a human?" I smile when I hear that because I know where we're going with it, I know what we've shot and I know what things look like. I can't wait for those people to see what's coming.

NYPost: Have you started playing Davis differently since he discovered that he can't die?
Witwer: Yea, a little. I know where I'd like the character to go, but for now, I am just taking a good deal of time with his utter disbelief. We'll see if the scripts mesh with that, but I would like to see his take on everything slowly change.

NYPost: Were you a fan of the comics growing up?
Witwer: I was a huge fan of the movies, especially the first two. I even got the Richard Donner director's cut of "Superman 2." It was such a cool insight into an incredible filmmakers head. There was so much more character development for Superman, especially when it came to giving up his powers. In Donner's version, that decision was so much more powerful than, "Oh hey, I think I like this chick, I'm gunna be less super from now on." But to find out I'm General Zod's son - I didn't see that one coming.

Tori Spelling Returning to Smallville

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Tori Spelling will be returning to Smallville as Daily Planet gossip columnist Linda Lake in an early 2009 episode.

Spelling's previous appearance on Smallville was in the season 6 episode "Hydro." That installment revealed that Linda Lake lives up to her family name by possessing the ability to liquify herself. The nosy reporter not only killed a man by drowning him in a fountain, but she also learned Clark's secret while eavesdropping in her liquid state. Linda's reign of terror ended when Lana ran her over with her car, causing the gossip guru to burst into a pool of water that soon disappeared down a drain.

There's no word on when Spelling's episode will air or what her character will be doing, though her knowledge of Clark's secret will most certainly play a role.

Ausiello also reports that Spelling is again in preliminary talks to appear on 90210. There's no guarantee that a deal will be reached, but if so it's likely she'd appear on the CW soap in the spring. Until then, Smallville fans can look forward to the actress sticking her liquid nose where it doesn't belong early next year.

Beyonce Wants To Be 'Wonder Woman,' Meets With DC/Warner Bros.

The big-screen debut of Wonder Woman, DC’s most iconic female superhero, has been plagued by on-again/off-again troubles for almost three decades, from Joss Whedon joining the project as a writer and then departing due to “creative differences” to co-producers Joel Silver and Leonard Goldberg soliciting story ideas from the Wachowski brothers. When (or rather, if) the project does happen, however, singer/actor Beyonce has made it clear that she’d like to wield the Amazon’s magic lasso.

“I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman?” Beyonce told LA Times blog Hero Complex. “It would be great. And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It’s time for that, right?”

And while there’s been no shortage of actors pitching themselves as big-screen superheroes these days, Beyonce said that she’s already met with DC and Warner Bros. to discuss the role.

“After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself, ‘OK, I need to be a superhero,’” said Beyonce. “Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotional. But there’s also an action element that I would enjoy.”

According to Hero Complex, Beyonce’s interest in Wonder Woman was first piqued when she saw the costume Lynda Carter wore to portray the superhero in the 1970s television series based on her adventures. As the report points out, however, big- and small-screen projects adapting the adventures of well-known female superheroes have been a rough sell — with Carter’s “Wonder Woman” one of the few bright spots thus far.

“… The superhero movies now, they’re not corny, not corny at all, so that’s what I want to do, ” said Beyonce. “And I would love if it could be Wonder Woman.”

CW Cancels Plans for "The Graysons"

The Boy Wonder won't be flying into primetime after all.

The CW and Warner Bros. TV have been forced to scrap their plans for "The Graysons." Show, which had been given a put pilot commitment, was set to revolve around Batman sidekick Robin in his pre-Caped Crusader days.

Decision to yank the project came from Warner Bros. Pictures Group prexy Jeff Robinov, who initially gave his blessing but changed his mind in recent days.

"Warner Bros. TV never had 100% clearance," said one exec familiar with the project.

The CW had been counting on "The Graysons" to fill the void left by the likely series end of "Smallville." Like "Smallville," "The Graysons" is a superhero origins story. Show was developed to revolve around the world of Dick "DJ" Grayson before taking on the iconic Robin identity.

Project was to be the latest DC Comics franchise to be mined for the smallscreen by Warner Bros. TV. "Smallville" exec producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson were set to write and exec produce, while Wonderland Sound and Vision's McG and Peter Johnson were also aboard to exec produce.

According to studio insiders, Robinov has decreed that Warner Bros. "rethink its DC Comics strategy" and as a result didn't want to do anything big with a DC franchise at the moment -- at least when it came to "Graysons."

"The studio has opted not to go forward with the development of 'The Graysons' at this time as the concept doesn't fit the current strategy for the Batman franchise," the studio said in a statement. "Warner Bros. Television is currently working on several replacement options for the CW."

"Superheroes and Secret Identities" Exhibit Opens in Ketchum, Idaho

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts in Ketchum, Idaho will open its new exhibit, "Superheroes and Secret Identities," on Friday, November 7th through Wednesday, January 7th which will take an up-close and personal look at the fascination with superheroes and secret identities.

Brandon Routh Talks About Plans for a Darker Superman

In an interview with IESB, Brandon Routh spoke about Warner Bros. Pictures plans to introduce a darker Superman and why he doesn't "think the character necessarily has to be darker".

"I think he is kind of dark in a sense, emotional dark, in Superman Returns, and the movie as a whole was slightly dark, they could have had more prowess in it I suppose, and I think that's one thing that can be done in the sequel, so I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily," he explained. "You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it."

He went on insisting, "But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not is nature. And that's now what people what to see."

Aside from dissing out darker Superman idea, he remains coy about his potential participation on the reboot. "I haven't really heard the studio's stance," he said when asked whether the studio have given him a time frame for the project. "I've just heard what's in the media and that every time I see somebody from Warner Bros. they tell me that they are working on it and are going to figure it out soon. But that's about the answer I get."

In addition, the 29-year-old also gave out whom he thinks should be Superman's next villain. "I think there are a lot of things you could do with Brainiac," he gushed. "He's been given a lot of power and a lot of different abilities over the years in the comics, as far as I understand...I honestly think there are a lot of interesting things you can do with Brainiac. Controlling people, controlling technology, a lot of cool things."

The full interview with Routh can be read at IESB.

Superman flying
Superman heat vision

Superman is the brainchild of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster who first envisioned the character in 1932 and later had his first appearance in Action Comics #1 in June 1938. What Jerry and Joe did not know at the time was that they had created a character that would become the signature icon of DC Comics and the most universally recognized hero in human history.

Since 1938, the character of Superman/Clark Kent has appeared in every imaginable media form including television, film, novelizations, and even a Broadway show.

Being Superman is the childhood fantasy of every little boy and girl (they of course want to be Supergirl). He is an enduring emblem of the American dream, the young immigrant who comes to the United States, embraces the culture and makes something of himself and enriches his adopted nation. He is a classical hero in the modern age who fights criminals, rescues the helpless and has a sense of morals and justice as strong and unshakeable as he is.

His homeworld was a planet called Krypton, a dying world. His parents, Jor-El and Lara hoping to save their son, placed his birthing matrix into a rocket and sent it to Earth so that he may live and could later use his abilities gained from the yellow sun to aid innocent life. Crash landing outside the town of Smallville, Kansas, the child was found and taken in by a farming couple. Jonathan and Martha Kent would become Kal-El's foster parents and raise him to the best of their ability. They named him Clark, and that name would become not only the link to his humanity but an alter ego that would help keep his loved ones from danger. As Clark grew into his teens, he found out more and more about his abilities, and as a young man he officially took on the guise of Superman thanks to a costume made by Martha from his swaddling clothes sent with him from Krypton.

By the time he was an adult he had gained the ability to fly, fire heat vision from his eyes and see through walls. From that point, he became the superhero we have all come to know and love. He became SUPERMAN!
