January 3, 2009: Superman on TV - January 4 to January 9
By Barry Freiman
Welcome to the abbreviated “Superman on TV” column covering the period from Sunday January 4, 2009 through Friday January 5, 2009. Thanks for putting up with my winter vacation schedule. I spent a week in Florida with my daughter where we spent New Year’s with my Mom/her grandmother (Nanny in our family). Hope everyone else had enjoyable holidays and starts to the New Year. Now onto the listings:
The New Year starts with a bang when “Superman Returns” makes its non-pay television debut. The 2006 film debuts on FX Tuesday at 6:30 PM in a 3 hour and 50 minute time slot. This is 20 minutes longer than the encore showing the next day, Wednesday, at 4 PM. Does this mean there are 20 minutes of additional commercials on top of the commercials breaking up the film the next day? Or could we see some deleted scenes added back in? Or perhaps a ‘making-of’ special? FX hasn’t said but, when it comes to “Superman” movies and deleted scenes, almost anything is possible.

January 2, 2009: Superheroes in Iraq
Times Online has published a blog by a reporter who visited the 1-244 Assault Helicopter Battalion, currently located in Iraq, who have Superman and other superhero icons representing the various company groups.
There was no sense of any special powers as I clamboured onboard one of the aircraft and it took off. Even as we cruised over fields and small villages, bouncing slightly in the wind, there was no hint of superhuman-ness.
It was only when we touched down at an even bigger base that the truth emerged: I was being carted around by a crew of Supermen.
Literally.
The Louisiana-based 1-244 Assault Helicopter Battalion is made up of superheroes.
A-Company, which I was with, is named after Superman, while B-Company is Batman. I am not too sure which comic book hero is associated with C-Company, but D-Company is dedicated to Ironman.
Specialist Cordell Mallory, 24, a gunner on my helicopter, has been a 'Superman' for six months.
"It feels awesome," he said. Asked where his red cape was, however, Specialist Mallory admitted: "I left it back home."
The 'S' logo scrawled across the real Superman's chest is emblazoned on walls around A-Company's headquarters at the Balad military base.
There is also an action picture of Clark Kent in his Superman garb painted on a concrete slab outside a large dining hall.

December 29, 2008: DC Universe Action Figures in 2009
Mattel has given fans a sneak peek at an Amanda Waller figure scheduled to be released some time in the first half of 2009.
We already revealed quite a lot at SDCC 2008 of our 2009 line up, but wanted to give everyone a little holiday treat before the New Year. Take a gander at the image [to the right]! We are not revealing where this figure fits into the line-up quite yet, but you will see her in the first half of 2009!
Mattel will also be releasing a range of single carded "Infinite Heroes" action figures (below you can see 1980s "Crisis" Supergirl and Alex Luthor), and more "Justice League Unlimited" 3-packs (below you can see Booster Gold, Superwoman, and Ultraman).
You can see more images at MattyCollector.com and Matty's new Facebook page.

December 28, 2008: Gary Robinson's "Superman on Earth" Reflections
Gary Robinson is a Superman fan who, like many of us, has lived with the Man of Steel for as long as he can remember. Gary is writing a series of articles about Superman in his life, and the Superman Homepage is pleased to publish them here for something different... a change of pace.
19. No More Tights, No More Flights?
By Gary Robinson
It was several months ago. We'd been living in southwestern Ohio for a good while. I'd asked Barb what she thought about a reprise of Flight to the North.
"Who would play Superman?" she asked.
I had an inkling where this was going, but I had to go ahead and say it, "Well, I thought I would."
"You're too old to play Superman."
Sigh. Never let it be said that the woman's ever been less than honest with me.
You're too old to play Superman.
With that thought echoing in my head, I went back in time, tracing the bumpy route we'd traveled to get here. It had been seven years since we'd left Kent, Ohio. In the interim, we'd made our own flight northwards, to a church in snow laden northwestern Pennsylvania. There, I'd pitched the idea for Flight to the North to certain influential people. It's a good thing I tested those waters, contacting people I figured might not care for Superman. As I recall, one associated Superman with the Occult. Another thought that play-acting in church was all right so long as nobody's feet left the ground. I'm very glad now that I didn't push the idea further.
